Ethereum
Ethereum is a decentralized, open-source blockchain with smart contract functionality. Ether (ETH or Ξ) is the native cryptocurrency of the platform. Amongst cryptocurrencies, Ether is second only to Bitcoin in market capitalization. Ethereum was conceived in 2013 by programmer Vitalik Buterin. Launched in July 2015, Ethereum is the largest and most well-established, open-ended decentralized software platform. Ethereum enables the deployment of smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps) to be built and run without any downtime, fraud, control, or interference from a third party. “Ethereum serves two purposes: One, it acts as money and can be a store of value,” says Bill Noble, chief technical analyst at Token Metrics, a cryptocurrency analytics platform. “But Ethereum is also like a highway for decentralized finance.” While Bitcoin remains the most popular cryptocurrency, Ethereum is quickly catching up. Ethereum's upgrade to ETH 2.0 could result in several major advantages over Bitcoin. From increased speed to greater efficiency, Ethereum has a bright future.
